Above you see an example of the color control box... There are many areas to click around on... Below is an example of it with the palettes opened... The Palette Examples page will give you an example of each of these palettes... All you do is click on the little palette button and down comes all of the choices for you to pick... Click on one and see what you get... Don't like it? Choose another!
First things first though, and this is very important, before making any changes at all, be sure to save your current palette (even if it's the defaul palette)... This way, if you decide you liked what you started with the best, you can just load it back up without difficulty... How do you do that you ask? Very simple! See the little area at the bottom left of the color box that says "Quick Palette"? And below that it ways "save" and "load"? This is where you can save your current scheme temporarily and load it back again... This will only work until you close FE, if you want to permanently save your work you look to the right of this area and you'll see a button that states "Save Palette"... Back to the temporary save: you click on save and a slider box will show - you click on the palette you want to save it as from 0 through 9... I usually start at the top and work my way down as the session goes on... That's all! Then, when you want to load a palette, just click on the little load button and choose the palette you saved... Get in the habit of always doing this or someday you'll be sorry!

Now, after you've chosen a color palette, you think "well, maybe it would look better in reds or blues" so you can either start sliding the color slider bars where it says "iteration starting" or you can click on the color order area which will give you many choices of color changes... Below is an example of this function... Just click until you find something you like...

If you wish to really have full control over your colors (I find this one a little difficult to master but you can get some amazing color combinations with the UF color control area... Just click on the tab that says "UF Colors"... See example of this area below... All those little squares in the pretty color palette area can be slid around to change the colors on your fractal... Right click and you can add more squares, or delete them... You can really go wild with this box... Also, I sometimes go from the "UF colors" area to the regular "color palette" area and back again... There is more detailed information about the UF color control box here which will open in a new page. This page is also linked from the main tutorial page.

Now, let's have a look at the "Texture" tab! This area you can really modify your fractal to your liking! You can add the stock textures that come with Fractal Explorer or you can add your own or ones you find on the web... I often use fractals I've made in the past as a texture (you can load your own textures as well)... You can make it so the fractal you are working on shows a great deal or you can make it so the texture shows more (this can be a stunning feature)... Below are 2 examples of the texture box, one is with the stock FE textures showing... Just click away!

To change the way the texture shows, you can click on several areas... See the "Alpha Control"? Change that 80 to make the fractal show more or less... See the "Infinitiy Area Only" check box? Uncheck it to make the texture show throughout the whole fractal and not just in the blank areas of the fractal... See the "Merge Mode" choice? Click on there and a whole bunch of choices pop up giving you the choice of darkening or brightening the texture, or of changing the feature of the texture to make it blend with the fractal differently... Again, it's a click away feature until you find something you really like... You'd be amazed at the different effects you can have on one fractal with this feature...
I hope this tutorial was a help to you... If you have any ideas that you think would help you then please don't hesitate to send an email to bubblybabs_feusers at gmx dot net...
